What Dark Surf processes
When enabled for a website, Dark Surf reads the page’s visual structure and styling inside Safari so it can calculate and apply a dark theme. This processing happens on the device as part of the Safari extension. Dark Surf does not copy page contents to a remote server, build a browsing profile, or retain the text and images from pages you visit.
The extension also reads the current website hostname to apply your per-site choice and to display whether Dark Surf is active for that page.
Information stored on your device
Dark Surf stores the settings needed to provide features you choose, including:
- Whether dark mode is enabled.
- Theme, intensity, contrast, saturation, and image preferences.
- Schedule and temporary-pause settings.
- Hostnames in your include and exclude lists.
- Local usage counts, such as pages themed and top hostnames.
These values are stored in Safari extension storage and in Dark Surf’s private shared App Group container (group.com.vali.darksurf.shared) so the iOS app and Safari extension can stay in sync. App Group storage is available only to Dark Surf’s app and its extension. Dark Surf does not transmit these settings or statistics to the developer.
Why Safari requests website access
Safari’s website-access permission is required because a dark-mode extension must read and modify page presentation on the websites where you enable it. Dark Surf uses this permission to inject local styles, react to page changes, apply your site rules, and show the extension’s status. It is not used to collect, sell, or transmit your browsing activity.
You control this permission in Safari settings and can allow access for all websites, ask on each website, deny a website, or disable the extension at any time.
Tracking, analytics, and data sharing
Dark Surf contains no advertising network, cross-app tracker, analytics service, or developer-operated telemetry. It does not create an account, assign an advertising identifier, sell personal data, or share browsing activity with data brokers or advertisers.
Apple may independently process App Store downloads, device diagnostics, or support information under Apple’s own settings and privacy policies. That processing is operated by Apple and is not part of Dark Surf’s in-app data collection.
Your choices and data deletion
You can edit or remove included and excluded hostnames, reset theme settings, clear local usage statistics, revoke website access, or disable Dark Surf at any time. Removing the app also removes its locally stored app container in accordance with iOS behavior.
Support email
If you contact support, the developer receives the email address and information you choose to send. That information is used only to understand and respond to your request and is not sold. Please avoid sending passwords, page contents, or other sensitive information.
Children’s privacy
Dark Surf is a general-purpose utility and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app does not operate accounts, analytics, or a remote data service, it does not create child profiles.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when Dark Surf’s features or legal obligations change. The effective and last-updated dates at the top of this page identify the current version.
